  • Can I start with Document Help and upgrade later?

Yes. Many clients start with Document Help and switch to Hearing Representation or Full Representation if the other parent contests the case or a hearing gets scheduled. We’ll explain what the new option costs before you decide, so there are no surprises.

  • Which option do I need if I already have a hearing date?

Most clients with a hearing on the calendar choose Hearing Representation, where an attorney appears with you at that specific hearing. If your case involves several hearings or a high-conflict custody dispute, Full Representation may be the better fit. Either way, call us as soon as you have a date. Deadlines to file your response come well before the hearing itself, and the earlier we start, the more time we have to prepare.

  • Will the court know an attorney helped me?

It depends on the option you choose.

    • Document Help: California allows an attorney to draft your family law court documents without telling the court, as long as the attorney doesn’t appear in your case. You file the documents and represent yourself.
    • Hearing Representation: Yes. We file a Notice of Limited Scope Representation that tells the court and the other party we’re representing you for that hearing.
    • Full Representation: Yes. We’re your attorney of record for the entire case.
  • What is a Notice of Limited Scope Representation?

It’s a court form (FL-950) that tells the judge and the other party exactly what your attorney is handling, such as one custody hearing or one restraining order hearing. We file it with the court and serve it on the other side. During that time, the other side sends us the documents related to those issues. When the agreed work is finished, we file a form telling the court our part is complete, and you continue on your own unless you choose to hire us for more.
